17 SQDN (EOD) RE Afghanistan Homecoming Parade and Garden Party

On Friday the 6th June 2014 members from the Association attended Carver Barracks, Wimbish on the occassion of the 17 SQDN (EOD) RE Afghanistan homecoming medals parade.

The day started at 12:00hrs with a reception and luncheon in the officers mess. At 13:00hrs Honorary Colonel Jools Holland unveiled the new regimental painting depicting an Afghanistan EOD search and destroy mission (Ltd Edition prints are available for members interested in a copy of the painting).

At 13:30hrs the Parade commenced on the Main Square led by the Band of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. The inspecting Office was Brigadier RJ Walton-Knight, Commander 8 Engineer Brigade.

Campaign Medals were presented to 1st tour members of 17 SQDN. The Queens Awards for Bravery was also presented to a young Sapper for his courage and bravery on a special forces mission. During the Parade a sermon was read by the Regimental Chaplian and a minutes silence was held in memory of the fallen, especially Corporal Jamie Kirkpatrick and Sapper William Blanchard whom both lost their lives due to enemy small arms fire in 2010.

Following the Parade a Garden Party/Family Day was held on the Cricket Pavillion, with Bar, BBQ, Live Band and Childrens entertainment.

The Parade also marked the end of Squadron level Search and EOD deployments to Afgahistan with the culmination of OP Herrick 19.
